Former Senator Augustus Humperdink Nonboris

The Nonborises of Quadrant 7 are a family dynasty with a long history stretching back to the first colonisation of the quadrant (claiming to have emigrated direct from Old Mars "in the days before it was fashionable to do so"). Since that time the Nonboris family has been involved in primary resource extraction and trading, often acting as middlemen between the more settled worlds such as Xynam and the more freebooting "Vikinger" areas, trading what was needed by both camps. The core of the family business is a syndicated network of oxygen farms covering more than a hundred belts and planetoids across dozens of systems in Q7. Rumours that the dynasty of oxygen farmers started out as claim-jacking oxygen thieves - and were actually Earthers - are strongly disputed with a characteristic mix of lawsuits and fisticuffs. Today the family business is diversified and has expanded beyond resource extraction and trading, into the economic equal of what would no doubt be an interstellar megacorporation in a less ruggedly individualistic quadrant. The official family motto is "big in stature, big in heart, big in oxygen", though the more informal family saying is "where's there's rocks, there's Ox!".

Traditionally the Nonborises have focused on "profit, profit, and a bit of profit wouldn't hurt either". They have eschewed involvement in politics beyond the necessary pleasantries (and sponsored nine-course dinners) that are typically necessary to keep relations with local lawmakers running smoothly. More recently, family interests have been hit hard by the Exterminator War, including financial tragedies as well as merely personal ones. Augustus Humperdink Nonboris, a leading son of the major branch of the family, surprised commentators by bypassing most of the normal progression of quadrant politics and advancing straight to the deputy governership and then to the leading Senatorial seat. It would be cynical, and even slightly inaccurate, to attribute this entirely to the deployment of the vast Nonboris family fortunes in their collective political interest. Augustus campaigned on a platform that was deeply resonant to the residents of Q7, who perhaps feel that their rugged traditions of independence and self-reliance have been penalised by insufficient consideration to the defence of their lives and property by Home World-centric "Unioners", even within the MSN itself. Augustus has mobilised a campaign which has in effect demanded - implied but as yet unspoken - that Q7 be given a full seat at the table in the MAFC and ICC - or take its extremely valuable skills and resources elsewhere, to a polity that can provide robust defence of life and limb (not to mention preserving the smooth operation of profitable commerce).

Politically, at an early stage Augustus was aligned to the FMP (for whom he was elected as Deputy Governor), and is suspected that his move to the MCGP, while not at all out of keeping with his (and his family's) politics, was opportunistic. Augustus (or his highly professional and highly paid political advisors) appear to have divined that the writing was on the wall for Senator Banderas, and managed to bring not just his original constituents but a large proportion of the Q7 electorate with him when he "aligned" himself to the MCGP. Within party circles it is acknowledged that in the current climate, the MCGP needs Nonboris a significant degree more than he needs them. The robust defence of Q7 was what his electorate demanded, along with leadership of the party for the man himself, and the "equal defence of all quadrants" (whatever that means, exactly) is now a cornerstone (but non-binding) platform pledge of the polity-wide MCGP. Augustus also campaigned on the slogan "We Can NOT Allow a Gravitic Gap!", which proved highly popular both with the larger industrial concerns of Q0, and their extensive networks of employees, suppliers, etc, and of course the hugely influential MSN itself.

With such a brief political track record for the man, and equally for the whole Nonboris dynasty, his next moves are difficult to predict. Fond of claiming ignorance with the expression "I grew up on an oxygen farm", keen observers suspect that behind the bluff exterior of a raw-element trader is the intelligence and guile of a man trained from birth to the expectation of wealth and power.

Nonboris was elected as a Senator for Q7 in 3218, and found himself ideally placed to replace Antoinette Banderas as head of the MCGF. He managed to parlay this into a position as Minister for War, and did a deal with the Free Mars Party to vote him as Chair of the Interstellar Coordination Committee. However, while his tenure of the reins of power was colourful, it ended disastrously in 3223 when attempts to impose a quarantine of Zubat led to the brink of war with the Mald Foundation and an academic boycott that paralysed Martian society. The MCGF were punished in the 3224 Senate elections and Nonboris lost his Senate seat.
